OBJECTIVES
ALLEGRO is a European demonstrator of the Generation IV Gas-cooled Fast Reactor (GFR) technology. Its purpose is to demonstrate the feasibility, safety and performance of GFR technology, qualify fuel elements, key systems and components, and support the development of future advanced nuclear reactors capable of producing low-carbon electricity, high-temperature heat for industrial applications and hydrogen production. The TREASURE project aims to increase the technological maturity and safety of ALLEGRO demonstrator through main objectives:
- Further optimization of the GFR fuel design and fuel cycle
- Exploring possibilities to further reduce spent fuel, to close fuel cycle and to further enhance proliferation resistance in GFRs
- ALLEGRO safety concept demonstration, including large-scale experimental verification
- Optimization of operation flexibility and performance of GFRs, using intermediate heat storage system, cogeneration, and hydrogen production
- Further enhancing ALLEGRO safety via use of passive and redundant safety systems
- Attracting students and young professionals to work on GFR development

EXPECTED IMPACT
- Acceleration of the development of innovative nuclear technologies in Europe by combining the expertise of leading research organisations and industry partners to address key technological challenges in Generation IV reactors.
- Support the development of advanced fuel technologies and more efficient fuel-cycle strategies, contributing to better resource utilisation, reduced spent fuel and enhanced sustainability of nuclear energy.
- By exploring high-temperature heat storage, cogeneration and hydrogen production, the project expands the potential of GFRs beyond electricity generation and supports the decarbonisation of European industries.
- TREASURE strengthens Europe’s long-term competitiveness and technological independence in advanced nuclear systems by consolidating European expertise, supporting the development of the ALLEGRO demonstrator and training the next generation of nuclear specialists
- S-Allegro is a key experimental facility used in TREASURE, helping to understand the GFR-relevant phenomena and enhance the validity, accuracy and robustness of European thermal-hydraulic codes.

HIGHLIGHTS
TREASURE advances the ALLEGRO GFR demonstrator towards the basic design phase by consolidating reactor design and improving the safety, reliability and technological maturity of key systems. The project focuses on advanced fuel and fuel-cycle strategies, experimental validation of decay heat removal, enhanced reactor control and passive safety, and innovative solutions for heat storage, cogeneration and hydrogen production. These activities strengthen the foundations for future GFR deployment and reinforce Europe’s expertise and competitiveness in Generation IV nuclear technology.
