What can six decades of research on irradiated nuclear materials tell us about the future of nuclear safety?

The answer lies behind the shielded windows of the JRC Hot Cells in Karlsruhe!

For 60 years, these unique European facilities have supported nuclear fuel safety research, generated independent scientific knowledge for EU policy and trained generations of researchers and technicians.

Across two half-day sessions, expert discussions, artistic perspectives, immersive 3D experiences and laboratory visits will take participants on a journey through six decades of Hot Cell research and innovation, from past achievements to the ideas and collaborations shaping its future.

The event will bring together European policymakers, nuclear safety authorities, research organisations and industry representatives to discuss the contribution of the JRC Hot Cells to nuclear fuel-cycle safety and their role in emerging reactor technologies, new fuel concepts, waste management and cross-border research.
