SNETP is excited to announce the publication of two pivotal studies selected from the 2023 SNETPFORWARD call for research. These reports provide invaluable insights into the future of nuclear research, development, and innovation, with a particular focus on the impact of geopolitical events and the European Union’s decarbonization efforts. The studies, conducted by ENCO and Jensen Hughes, Finland Oy, address urgent topics: the effects of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine on nuclear R&D&I and an in-depth assessment of the EU’s nuclear landscape, including workforce readiness for the energy transition.

Study 1: The Impact of the Ukrainian Conflict on Nuclear R&D&I Conducted by: ENCO
The first study examines how the war in Ukraine has impacted nuclear research, development, and innovation, not just within Ukraine but also across Europe. The report offers a thorough techno-economic analysis, highlighting the disruptions to supply chains, research initiatives, and geopolitical stability. It also looks at the opportunities for resilience and adaptation within the European nuclear sector. The findings are crucial for policymakers, researchers, and industry professionals looking to understand the broader implications of the conflict on nuclear energy and innovation.

Study 2: Assessment of the EU’s Nuclear Research, Development, and Innovation Landscape
Conducted by: Jensen Hughes, Finland Oy
The second study offers an extensive evaluation of the current state of nuclear research, development, and innovation in the European Union. It highlights the EU’s role in advancing nuclear technologies, assessing how well current frameworks support decarbonization goals and the transition to low-carbon energy. A key focus of the report is workforce readiness — particularly the skills and competencies needed to drive future nuclear innovations. This assessment provides a roadmap for future investments and policy directions, ensuring that Europe is equipped to meet the decarbonization challenge while maintaining leadership in nuclear innovation.
