On 21 April 2021, the European Commission announced its intention to adopt a complementary Delegated Act of the EU Taxonomy Regulation to include activities not yet covered in the EU Taxonomy Climate Delegated Act. Nuclear energy shall be included in this complementary Delegated Act “subject and consistent with the results of the specific review process underway in accordance with the EU Taxonomy Regulation”.
On 2 July 2021, the two expert groups designated by the European Commission (Art.31 and SCHEER groups) published their opinions related to the JRC report. While Art 31 confirmed the JRC report, SCHEER has raised a query as to whether the assessment of nuclear on the basis of the existing criteria under the taxonomy is enough to demonstrate that it does ‘no significant harm’.
Further political discussions are expected during summer, before the European Commission reveals how nuclear could be included in the taxonomy.
