In a significant milestone for Europe’s energy future, the European Industrial Alliance on Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) has announced the first wave of Project Working Groups (PWGs). These nine projects, selected from a competitive pool of 22 proposals, will spearhead the development and deployment of innovative SMR technologies across Europe.
The European Industrial Alliance on SMRs, launched in February 2024, aims to accelerate the commercialization of SMRs, promising to enhance energy security and sustainability. Following the selection of its Governing Board in May, the Alliance opened a call for SMR project proposals in June. After rigorous evaluation, nine standout projects were chosen in October, positioning Europe as a leader in next-generation nuclear technology.
The selected PWGs include major players in the energy sector:
- EU-SMR-LFR (Ansaldo Nucleare, SCK CEN, ENEA, RATEN)
- CityHeat (Calogena, Steady Energy)
- Project Quantum (Last Energy)
- European LFR AS (newcleo)
- NUWARD (EDF)
- European BWRX-300 SMR (ORLEN Synthos Green Energy)
- Rolls-Royce SMR (Rolls-Royce SMR)
- NuScale VOYGR™ SMR (RoPower Nuclear)
- Thorizon One (THORIZON)
These projects represent a broad range of SMR technologies, including liquid fluoride reactors (LFR), light water reactors, and advanced fuel cycle innovations, all aimed at bolstering Europe’s clean energy transition.
For those not selected, there will be another opportunity to apply in Q2 2025, providing additional details for consideration.
This initiative reflects Europe’s commitment to fostering innovation, ensuring energy resilience, and meeting its sustainability goals. Stay tuned for future updates as these projects progress and contribute to reshaping Europe’s energy landscape.
