At the heart of this are environmental policies\, especially the package of policies that were the hallmark of Ursula von der Leyen’s first term: the Green Deal. \nIn response to criticism\, the Green Deal has been repackaged as the Clean Industrial Deal. But does this go far enough to address the problems Europe faces? Europe’s problems are vast: from failing policies at home to pressures coming from abroad. External problems concern for example Europe’s dependency on critical raw materials and energy sources that it needs to import\, while internally-generated problems include the inhibition of European enterprises by excessive regulation\, misallocation of resources\, and policies that increasingly drive companies away from Europe. \nThe roots of these problems are deep. This conference will address two areas fundamental to Europe’s success: energy and industry. SUMMARY:TANDEM Technical Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The TANDEM project is organising a second\, free\, open technical workshop on 20-21 February 2025 and will be held at “Le Benedettine” Congress Centre of the University of Pisa (UNIPI)\, Pisa (Italy) on ‘Modelling and optimisation tools to assess hybrid energy systems integrating nuclear reactors’. \nThe technical workshop is specifically conceived for MSc and PhD students\, PostDocs\, young and experienced researchers and engineers that are interested in deepening their knowledge on the potential role that hybrid energy systems including Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) play in the ongoing energy transition.\nThe workshop will focus on the description of SMR modelling and optimisation tools to assess hybrid energy systems integrating nuclear reactors\, together with the SMR coupling with other energy sources and energy storage systems in hybrid energy systems. \nPlease note that\, given the specificity of the technical workshop\, applicants are required to have a general background in nuclear systems. SUMMARY:GO-VIKING: Lecture Series “Fluid-Structure Interaction for Nuclear Applications”
DESCRIPTION:Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) is essential in many industrial applications and is actively studied in the nuclear sector. Knowledge and understanding of FSI and Fluid-Induced Vibration (FIV) are critical to estimating the lifetime of the different components (pipelines\, heat exchangers\, turbines\, etc.) concerning fatigue\, cracking\, possible failure modes\, and mechanical wear. Recently\, the use of numerical tools to simulate FIV has received large interest due to the availability of more computational resources and the necessity to analyze complex configurations with more details. This Lecture Series aims to provide a detailed background to welcome novices in the field and a comprehensive overview of recent developments of computational FSI in various industrial applications. \n  \nOver the course of four days\, several well-known experts from around the world\, most of them involved in the EU-funded GO-VIKING project\, will explore important topics related to FSI in order to understand and study FIV in different applications. SUMMARY:Powering the Future: Policy & Siting Strategies for New Nuclear
DESCRIPTION:The European Union is committed to providing secure and affordable energy for its competitive industry and all citizens. Nuclear energy\, accounting for almost one quarter of the electricity produced in the EU and representing 50% of the low-carbon electricity\, plays a crucial role in responding to these urgent needs. \nIn recent months\, numerous initiatives have emerged to underscore the pivotal role of nuclear energy in the EU’s decarbonisation efforts. The Nuclear Alliance of the EU Member States has recognised that nuclear could provide up to 150 GW of electricity capacity by 2050 in the EU compared to the approximately 100 GW of today. This will entail significant investments in new-built nuclear reactors. \nWithin this context\, Poland has decided to embark in a significant nuclear investment program in order to operate a paradigm shift and power the country\, its industry and households with a low carbon technology. In order to complete all the necessary steps to build its first nuclear power plant\, including large reactors and SMR and Advanced Modular Reactors\, many issues need to be taken into account. \nThis workshop wishes to focus on the key elements for development and deployment of nuclear\, namely policies and siting. \nThe purpose of the workshop is to engage with all stakeholders that can advance in nuclear development\, including policymakers\, developers\, end users and regions\, communities and municipalities. The first panel will focus on policy measures to support investments in the next generation of nuclear reactors. The second panel will focus on the issue of the siting of new nuclear plants\, covering topics such as the localisation of nuclear plants\, protecting human health and the environment in a community-driven way\, while balancing risk-based economic opportunities. \n  \nAn event co-organised by Nucleareurope in partnership with the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Poland to the EU and the Polish Ministry of Industry.

DESCRIPTION:The third preparatory webinar in preparation for the Fourth NEA Stakeholder Involvement Workshop will focus on Building Effective Frameworks for Inclusive Stakeholder Engagement. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nBackground\n\n\n\nThe NEA Stakeholder Involvement Workshops (SIWS) are known for fostering active discussions and collaboration. The first edition was held in 2017 with a focus on stakeholder involvement in nuclear decision making. The second edition in 2019 focused on risk communication. The third workshop held in September 2023 was centred around the theme of optimisation in decision making. Other relevant workshops have included the joint NEA and DSA (Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority) workshop Regulatory Framework of Decommissioning\, Legacy Sites and Wastes from Recognition to Resolution: Building Optimisation into the Process (2019)\, the NEA workshop Optimisation: Rethinking the Art of the Reasonable (2020)\, and the NEA workshop Multifactor Optimisation of Predisposal Management of Radioactive Waste (2020). \nPower imbalances among stakeholders can be further intensified in cases where there is inadequate representation and/or limited resource availability to representatives from civil society and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in official forums and decision-making processes. The design of the decision-making process is crucial in effectively involving stakeholders. If the process lacks transparency and outcomes may be altered behind closed doors\, then the decision-making process has not been properly designed to balance power\, foster learning\, and enable consensus-building. \nThe NEA recognises the importance of continuing its work on stakeholder involvement\, which is a key goal outlined in its Strategic Plan 2023-2028. In this regard\, setting the stage for the fourth edition of the NEA Stakeholder Involvement Workshop in October 2025 is a priority. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nWebinar objectives\n\n\n\nThe third preparatory webinar for the Fourth NEA Stakeholder Involvement Workshop has the following overarching objectives: \n\nConsolidation of insights: Summarise and contextualise the key takeaways from the first two webinars (balanced power and influence\, mitigating power imbalances) to create a cohesive foundation for the workshop.\nFocus on practical tools: Discuss frameworks\, guidelines\, and mechanisms that enable inclusive stakeholder engagement\, focusing on how to operationalise the principles of equity\, trust\, and inclusivity. \nCase studies and best practices: Showcase or identify case studies where successful frameworks have been implemented to address stakeholder engagement challenges in the nuclear sector or similar contexts. SUMMARY:IAEA Stakeholder Engagement Conference (May 26-30\, 2025\, Vienna\, Austria)
DESCRIPTION:Background\nNuclear energy can help countries achieve energy security\, climate goals and drive sustainable development. Engaging with stakeholders at all stages of the nuclear fuel cycle\, up to and including the disposal of radioactive waste\, is an essential part of any complete nuclear power programme. Involving stakeholders\, even those that do not have a direct role in making decisions\, can enhance public confidence\, support informed decision making and strengthen communication among the key organizations involved in nuclear power programmes. In this regard\, it is necessary to understand the opinions and concerns of stakeholders\, including the public\, and address these concerns effectively in a consistent and clear way. The factors that most influence stakeholders’ support include nuclear and radiation safety\, nuclear security\, waste management\, environmental impact and proliferation risks as well as the understanding of the benefits associated with a nuclear power programme. Building strong\, positive\, and long-term relationships with stakeholders is a key element for both existing and future nuclear power programmes. \nA nuclear power programme is a major undertaking and a long-term commitment\, for the entire facilities’ life cycle right through to final disposal of the ensuing waste. This requires careful planning\, preparation and investment in terms of time\, institutions\, and human resources. The IAEA Milestones Approach (NG-G-3.1 Rev.2 pre-print) identifies 19 infrastructure issues that need to be addressed during the three phases of nuclear infrastructure development to ensure the sustainable implementation of a nuclear power programme. Stakeholder engagement is one of those issues; it is also subject to IAEA Safety Requirements. \nThe IAEA has in place a set of activities to support Member States in the area of stakeholder engagement by providing guidance on communicating and engaging with both internal and external stakeholders and regularly holding international\, national and regional events on stakeholder engagement. \nIn response to increasing interest and requests for support on stakeholder engagement and communicating about nuclear energy\, the IAEA is organizing the first International Conference on Stakeholder Engagement for Nuclear Power Programmes from 26 to 30 May 2025\, in Vienna\, Austria. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nPurpose and Objectives\nThe conference will provide a global platform to exchange good practices\, experiences\, challenges and lessons learned related to stakeholder engagement for nuclear power programmes. It will enhance global understanding of diverse perspectives\, concerns\, and interests of stakeholders involved in nuclear power programmes at various levels. It will also share methods and approaches to address the concerns of stakeholders and incorporate their views into the decision-making process. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTarget Audience\nThe conference is open to participants from Member States that are embarking on or considering embarking on new nuclear power programmes as well as Member States with operating nuclear power plants\, including those considering expanding their nuclear power programmes. The conference is also open to participants from Member States implementing or planning to implement nuclear fuel cycle activities and/or radioactive waste management activities related to nuclear power programmes. Participants are expected to include stakeholder engagement practitioners and communication experts\, policy makers\, government officials\, regulators\, owners\, operators\, technical support organizations\, waste management organizations\, organizations which represent local community interests\, industry representatives\, research and academic institutions\, non‑governmental organizations and international organizations with an interest in stakeholder engagement for nuclear programmes. \nThe IAEA highly encourages the participation of women\, early career professionals\, and individuals from developing countries. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nExhibitions\nA limited amount of space will be available for commercial vendors’ displays/exhibits during the conference.
