SUMMARY:23rd INPRO Dialogue Forum on Nuclear Energy Innovations to Support Net-Zero Transition
DESCRIPTION:The INPRO Dialogue Forum is primarily open to participants from the INPRO Member States. The forum is also open to other interested IAEA Member States and international organizations. \nThe purpose of the event is to provide a platform for Member States and other stakeholders to share ideas\, concepts and information related to current and/or emerging topics regarding nuclear energy system development and sustainability. \nThe International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO)\, launched in 2000\, aims to ensure sustainable nuclear energy development in the 21st century. INPRO\, endorsed by the IAEA General Conference resolution GC (44)/RES/21\, integrates all aspects crucial for nuclear energy sustainability. Its membership includes 43 IAEA Member States (MSs) and the European Commission. The 32nd INPRO Steering Committee Meeting in 2023 endorsed the organization of an INPRO Dialogue Forum in 2024 on various applications of nuclear energy as a sustainable energy source to mitigate the global climate change. To achieve the net-zero goal by 2050\, nuclear energy\, particularly from small modular reactors (SMRs)\, plays a crucial role beyond electricity generation. Nuclear energy can support hydrogen production\, district heating\, desalination\, and cogeneration. These non-electric applications are vital in reducing emissions from industries\, heating\, and transportation by providing clean alternatives to fossil fuels. This integrated approach is essential for comprehensive decarbonization efforts. The 23rd Dialogue Forum covers topics related to nuclear energy innovations needed to accelerate the transition to net-zero\, with. a focus on SMRs. This Dialogue Forum will include keynote addresses\, presentations by invited speakers\, and discussion sessions involving all participants.

SUMMARY:Re-energise: economic growth beyond the Green Deal
DESCRIPTION:Re-energise: economic growth beyond the Green Deal \n\n11:30 – 17:30\nTuesday 18th February 2025\nEU Thon Hotel\, Rue de la loi 75\, 1040 Brussels\n\nRegistration from 11:00 \nREGISTER HERE\nEurope’s economies are struggling under the burden of regulation\, the cost of energy\, and dependency on foreign powers and companies. At the heart of this are environmental policies\, especially the package of policies that were the hallmark of Ursula von der Leyen’s first term: the Green Deal. \nIn response to criticism\, the Green Deal has been repackaged as the Clean Industrial Deal. But does this go far enough to address the problems Europe faces? Europe’s problems are vast: from failing policies at home to pressures coming from abroad. External problems concern for example Europe’s dependency on critical raw materials and energy sources that it needs to import\, while internally-generated problems include the inhibition of European enterprises by excessive regulation\, misallocation of resources\, and policies that increasingly drive companies away from Europe. \nThe roots of these problems are deep. This conference will address two areas fundamental to Europe’s success: energy and industry. We will examine both policy errors and potential solutions. How do we move beyond platitudes and seriously re-energise European economies? \nConference: Re-energise: economic growth beyond the Green Deal \n\nPanel 1: Europe’s economic reality and the impact of the Green Deal\nPanel 2: Powering European growth\nPanel 3: Re-energise: finding an alternative vision to the Green Deal\n\n

SUMMARY:GO-VIKING: Lecture Series “Fluid-Structure Interaction for Nuclear Applications”
DESCRIPTION:Fluid-structure interaction (FSI) is essential in many industrial applications and is actively studied in the nuclear sector. Knowledge and understanding of FSI and Fluid-Induced Vibration (FIV) are critical to estimating the lifetime of the different components (pipelines\, heat exchangers\, turbines\, etc.) concerning fatigue\, cracking\, possible failure modes\, and mechanical wear. Recently\, the use of numerical tools to simulate FIV has received large interest due to the availability of more computational resources and the necessity to analyze complex configurations with more details. This Lecture Series aims to provide a detailed background to welcome novices in the field and a comprehensive overview of recent developments of computational FSI in various industrial applications. \n  \nOver the course of four days\, several well-known experts from around the world\, most of them involved in the EU-funded GO-VIKING project\, will explore important topics related to FSI in order to understand and study FIV in different applications. Additionally\, an interactive panel discussion will offer insight into the perspectives of industry leaders on the challenges and solutions related to FIV in nuclear applications. \n  \nThis Lecture Series has been organized in the context of the GO-VIKING project\, which has received funding from the European Union’s Euratom research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101059603. \n  \nAgenda: VKI Lecture Series\n31 March-03 April 2025\nDay 1 – Monday\, 31/03/25 \n08:30-09:00 Registration \n09:00-09:15 Welcome Address\nVKI Director The von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI)\, Belgium \n09:15-10:45 Introduction to Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI)/Flow-Induced Vibration (FIV)\nProf. Joris Degroote\, University of Ghent\, Belgium \n10:45-11:15 Break \n11:15-12:45 FIV in Nuclear Reactor Components / Facilities Dr Pascal Veber Vattenfall\, Sweden \n12:45-14:00 Lunch \n14:00-15:30 The Importance of Understanding FIV in Nuclear Reactor Components Dr Daniele Vivaldi Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire (IRSN)\, France \n15:30-16:00 Break \n16:00-17:30 The View of Industries on FIV in Nuclear Applications\nPaulus Smeekes (TVO\, Finland) Dr Hidajet Hadzic (Framatome GmbH\, Germany) Dr Pascal Veber (Vattenfall\, Sweden) Pierre Moussou (EDF\, France) \n17:30 – 19:00 Reception\, break of the ice \n  \nDay 2 – Tuesday\, 01/04/25 \n09:00-10:30 Analytical Methods for the Evaluation of FIV\nDr Angel Papukchiev Gesellschaft Fuer Anlagen-Und Reaktorsicherheit (GRS)\, Germany \n10:30-11:00 Break \n11:00-12:30 Measurement techniques for FSI/FIV in single-phase flows\nDr Mostafa Nabawy\nUniversity of Manchester\, UK \n12:30-14:00 Lunch \n14:00-15:30 Best practices to investigate single-phase FIV in bundle geometries through laboratory experiments Philippe Planquart The von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI)\, Belgium \n15:30-16:00 Break \n16:00-17:30 Visit of the GOKSTAD experimental facility \n  \nDay 3 – Wednesday\, 02/04/25 \n09:00-10:30 Computational Methods for single-phase FSI/FIV Dr Sofiane Benhamadouche Électricité de France (EdF)\, France \n10:30-11:00 Break \n11:00-12:30 Best practices to investigate single-phase FIV in bundle geometries by CFD Dr Salim Elbouzidi Canadian Nuclear Lab\, Canada \n12:30-14:00 Lunch \n14:00-15:30 Reduced-order Models for FSI/FIV Ir. SUMMARY:Powering the Future: Policy & Siting Strategies for New Nuclear
DESCRIPTION:The European Union is committed to providing secure and affordable energy for its competitive industry and all citizens. Nuclear energy\, accounting for almost one quarter of the electricity produced in the EU and representing 50% of the low-carbon electricity\, plays a crucial role in responding to these urgent needs. \nIn recent months\, numerous initiatives have emerged to underscore the pivotal role of nuclear energy in the EU’s decarbonisation efforts. The Nuclear Alliance of the EU Member States has recognised that nuclear could provide up to 150 GW of electricity capacity by 2050 in the EU compared to the approximately 100 GW of today. This will entail significant investments in new-built nuclear reactors. \nWithin this context\, Poland has decided to embark in a significant nuclear investment program in order to operate a paradigm shift and power the country\, its industry and households with a low carbon technology. In order to complete all the necessary steps to build its first nuclear power plant\, including large reactors and SMR and Advanced Modular Reactors\, many issues need to be taken into account. \nThis workshop wishes to focus on the key elements for development and deployment of nuclear\, namely policies and siting. \nThe purpose of the workshop is to engage with all stakeholders that can advance in nuclear development\, including policymakers\, developers\, end users and regions\, communities and municipalities. The first panel will focus on policy measures to support investments in the next generation of nuclear reactors. The second panel will focus on the issue of the siting of new nuclear plants\, covering topics such as the localisation of nuclear plants\, protecting human health and the environment in a community-driven way\, while balancing risk-based economic opportunities. \n  \nAn event co-organised by Nucleareurope in partnership with the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Poland to the EU and the Polish Ministry of Industry.
