SUMMARY:IAEA Technical Meeting on Advancements and New Developments in Water Cooled Reactor Designs
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of the meeting is to gather insights and perspectives from vendors and research organizations on potential game changers that could lead to new developments in water-cooled reactor (WCR) concepts and designs aimed at improving safety features to prevent accidents and mitigate their consequences\, increase thermal efficiency\, reliability\, and overall performance\, and facilitate integration with future energy systems. \nSpecific objectives of the meeting are as follows: \n\nShare knowledge on current and emerging WCR advancements: facilitate the exchange of insights on the latest developments in WCR designs\, with a focus on features that enhance operational flexibility\, safety\, and efficiency;\nIdentify drivers and opportunities for WCR development: explore key factors driving progress in WCR technology\, including the integration of new materials\, artificial intelligence\, digital technologies\, and advanced systems designed to minimize accident risks\, enable real-time monitoring\, and improve overall performance;\nAddress technological challenges: discuss critical technological difficulties\, including the development of solutions for modular construction and transportability\, to support the scalability and deployment of WCR designs;\nEvaluate future research directions and collaboration opportunities: identify promising areas for future research\, promote international collaboration\, and explore potential co-development projects that can accelerate WCR advancements\, meet growing global energy demands\, and ensure both safety and sustainability.\n\nFurthermore\, the event will offer a platform for participants to engage in interactive discussion sessions\, allowing them to contribute to event summaries\, share key insights\, and propose future initiatives to the IAEA. Contributions in the form of technical papers\, presentations\, and session discussions will be compiled into an IAEA publication. This publication will serve as a valuable reference for stakeholders such as technology developers\, technical support organizations\, computer code developers\, licensees\, and national regulators\, while also providing the public with a comprehensive overview of ongoing efforts in this field.\nAll persons wishing to participate in the event have to be designated by an IAEA Member State or should be members of organizations that have been invited to attend.\nIn order to be designated by an IAEA Member State or invited organization\, participants are requested to submit their application via the InTouch+ platform (https://intouchplus.iaea.org) to the competent national authority (Ministry of Foreign Affairs\, Permanent Mission to the IAEA or National Atomic Energy Authority) or organization for onward transmission to the IAEA by 15 March 2025\, following the registration procedure in InTouch+.

SUMMARY:5th SNETP PROJECT PORTFOLIO WEBINAR – TANDEM\, SANE\, EASI-SMR
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the fifth webinar in the SNETP 2025 Project Portfolio Series on 7 May\, 13:00 – 14:00\, where we will provide updates on three important Euratom-funded projects of our SNETP Portfolio focused on SMRs. Learn more about: \n\nTANDEM aims to develop methodologies and tools to facilitate the safe and efficient integration of SMRs into smart low-carbon hybrid energy systems. It addresses safety issues and assess the feasibility of SMR integration into hybrid energy systems.\nSANE investigates the potential of non-electric usage of nuclear energy\, the safety aspects of reactors designed for non-electric use as well as the safety implications of the end use.\nEASI-SMR addresses safety issues related to LW-SMR technology to support its implementation. The project aims to ensure safe reactor design\, construction\, and operation\, with a focus on innovations such as passive systems\, soluble boron-free cores\, co-generation\, additive manufacturing\, and multi-unit operation.\n\nThroughout the webinar\, you’ll have the chance to ask questions and engage with the SNETP community\, exchanging ideas and insights on the future of nuclear energy.

SUMMARY:Third NEA Preparatory Webinar: Building Effective Frameworks for Inclusive Stakeholder Engagement
DESCRIPTION:The third preparatory webinar in preparation for the Fourth NEA Stakeholder Involvement Workshop will focus on Building Effective Frameworks for Inclusive Stakeholder Engagement. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nBackground\n\n\n\nThe NEA Stakeholder Involvement Workshops (SIWS) are known for fostering active discussions and collaboration. The first edition was held in 2017 with a focus on stakeholder involvement in nuclear decision making. The second edition in 2019 focused on risk communication. The third workshop held in September 2023 was centred around the theme of optimisation in decision making. Other relevant workshops have included the joint NEA and DSA (Norwegian Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority) workshop Regulatory Framework of Decommissioning\, Legacy Sites and Wastes from Recognition to Resolution: Building Optimisation into the Process (2019)\, the NEA workshop Optimisation: Rethinking the Art of the Reasonable (2020)\, and the NEA workshop Multifactor Optimisation of Predisposal Management of Radioactive Waste (2020). \nPower imbalances among stakeholders can be further intensified in cases where there is inadequate representation and/or limited resource availability to representatives from civil society and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in official forums and decision-making processes. The design of the decision-making process is crucial in effectively involving stakeholders. If the process lacks transparency and outcomes may be altered behind closed doors\, then the decision-making process has not been properly designed to balance power\, foster learning\, and enable consensus-building. \nThe NEA recognises the importance of continuing its work on stakeholder involvement\, which is a key goal outlined in its Strategic Plan 2023-2028. In this regard\, setting the stage for the fourth edition of the NEA Stakeholder Involvement Workshop in October 2025 is a priority. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nWebinar objectives\n\n\n\nThe third preparatory webinar for the Fourth NEA Stakeholder Involvement Workshop has the following overarching objectives: \n\nConsolidation of insights: Summarise and contextualise the key takeaways from the first two webinars (balanced power and influence\, mitigating power imbalances) to create a cohesive foundation for the workshop.\nFocus on practical tools: Discuss frameworks\, guidelines\, and mechanisms that enable inclusive stakeholder engagement\, focusing on how to operationalise the principles of equity\, trust\, and inclusivity. \nCase studies and best practices: Showcase or identify case studies where successful frameworks have been implemented to address stakeholder engagement challenges in the nuclear sector or similar contexts. Lead thought:  Why did it work; what are the lessons learned? \nPreparation for action: Generate actionable ideas and recommendations that participants can refine during the October workshop.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTarget audience\n\n\n\nThe target audience includes a diverse range of stakeholders\, such as representatives from government institutions\, industry sector\, academic and research institutions\, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) from NEA member countries and beyond. Particular focus will be placed on ensuring representative participation from civil society. Additionally\, the audience is set to include participants from previous editions of the NEA Stakeholder Involvement Workshop series. \nThe registration deadline for this webinar is 5 May 2025. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nFourth NEA Stakeholder Involvement Workshop\nThe fourth edition of the NEA Stakeholder Involvement Workshop\, with the title Optimisation in Decision Making: From Insight to Action\, is scheduled to take place in Paris from 15–17 October 2025.\n\n\n\nRegistration is open on the event web page.
